This was done with early engine control units from the 1980’s & 1990’s. Today, the term chip tuning can be misleading, as people will often use it to describe ECU tuning (Ecu Remapping) but this however does no longer involve removal of the microchip. Modern electronic control units can be tuned by simply updating the vehicles engine calibration software through a standard interface the OBD (onboard diagnostic socket). This procedure can also be referred to as Ecu Tuning (electronic control unit) tuning. Most electronic control units first appeared in the late 1970s.
